The Printing Charity - Donations
Why Should You Help The Printing Charity?
Established in 1827 (Reign of George IV) The Printing Charity is one of the UK’s oldest occupational charities, delivering active support to current and previous employees of the printing, publishing and graphic arts industries and their dependents.
In 1827 the then Printers’ Pension Society (forerunner of The Printing Charity) raised £310 16 s which in today’s money would be worth over £30,000. In 2009, voluntary income (donations) was £6,000.
The Charity is committed to using its income and reserves to further its charitable objectives. Since its founding by George and Charles Searle and their employer, Mr John King of College Hill in the City of London at the Kings Head Tavern in the Poultry, the Charity has supported those who work in the industries, particularly in times of radical change. Throughout its history it has risen to the challenge of national crisis, such as the first and second world wars.
Today The Printing Charity wishes to continue to help more people who work or have worked in the industry, but in a sustainable way. In order to sustain our Charity we need your help!
The Charity has undertaken initiatives such as the flood grants for Gloucester and Humberside during 2007 and the distribution of the donations to ex-employees of Butler and Tanner following a generous donation from the new owner of Butler, Tanner and Dennis, Felix Dennis. In January 2010 we distributed an additional £50 to the beneficiaries of our Regular Financial Assistance. This money was sent out within a week of the heavy snowfall and meant that our beneficiaries were able to use the Winter Weather Payment to help with increased home heating bills.
The following are drawn from the draft accounts which are due to be approved by Trustees at the end of March and presented to the members in May.
- Number of people helped up 67%
- Number of residents benefiting from the Charity’s Homes up 32%
- Amount of money spent on grants up 32% (excluding Butler, Tanner and Dennis)
- Number of people helped with grants up 85%
- Butler, Tanner and Dennis, £150,000 distributed in 4 months (October 2008 – February 2009)
With your help we can assist more people but without funds we simply cannot do this. It’s your Charity…make a donation – make a difference!
