Molly Slight is the Editorial Director at Scribe and was a Rising Star in 2017. We heard from her about what she did with her award and how it has shaped her career.

When I applied for the Print Futures Awards (now Rising Star Awards) in 2017, I had recently been promoted to a managerial position at the company I still work for, Scribe UK, and was keen to develop my management and leadership skills for this new role.

On the recommendation of the panel, I put the funding I received towards a Clore Emerging Leaders course, an intensive one-week residential program with participants from various arts and culture backgrounds.

It is not an exaggeration to say that the course completely changed the way that I work and how I see my role in the wider publishing industry. It helped me to analyse the kind of leader that I am and discover my strengths and weaknesses, as well as developing practical management skills that I use every day in my job. It also provided me with a wonderful support network of other arts and cultures professionals who I am still in touch with to this day.

I have since progressed to director level at Scribe and taken on voluntary positions within the wider publishing community, including a trustee role at Wasafiri magazine and various mentorships, using the leadership skills that I developed on the course.

This was all possible because of the funding I received from the The Printing Charity and I now encourage everybody I know who is eligible to apply. Progression in my industry can sometimes feel elusive; I have been lucky to work for a company that has always supported my goals, but having the opportunity to do additional training has given me the confidence to seek and achieve promotion, and feel ready to step into roles requiring more leadership and strategic skills.
