This year’s International Day of Happiness, on 20th March, focuses on ‘sharing and caring’ and highlights how happiness flourishes when we connect with others, show kindness, and support one another. Happiness means different things to different people, but it often comes from meaningful relationships, fulfilling work, and a sense of purpose. Lasting happiness comes from caring for each other, feeling connected and being part of something bigger.
Personal life happiness
Happiness in your personal life is often tied to love, connection, and gratitude. Whether it’s spending time with loved ones, enjoying a hobby, or simply appreciating the little moments, joy comes from experiences rather than material possessions. Austin Coyne, Head of Print Services at Haybrook says “spending quality time with my crazy kids and watching Chelsea—when they actually decide to turn up and play!” brings him the most happiness.
Studies show that people who cultivate gratitude and meaningful relationships experience higher levels of overall wellbeing. Karen Bain, People Director, at Saica UKI and Benelux agrees: “Happiness comes from the simple pleasures in life, summer sunshine, spring flowers, and time spent with friends and family.”
Happiness at work
Since we spend a significant portion of our lives at work, workplace happiness is just as important. Feeling valued, having a sense of purpose, and maintaining a positive work environment contribute to professional wellbeing. Sarah Smith, Office Manager at Duplo International Ltd says, “Happiness at work is when is it busy, everyone is mucking in together and as a group we achieve what we set out to do. Particularly open days & events – absolutely satisfying and lots of banter!”
Happy employees bring positivity to the workplace, creating a ripple effect that can boost the morale of the entire team. Happy people are also often more engaged, creative, and productive, so it can have great benefits for your employer too. “Having a laugh with the team” says Austin, “and discovering new ways to drive innovation in the print marketplace” creates happiness at work while Karen agrees: “Happiness comes from teamwork and a sense of purpose.”
