“I’m in a much better frame of mind since we moved here.”
Life in a Printing Charity Almshouse: Christopher & Patricia’s story

Life in a Printing Charity Almshouse

Christopher and Patricia moved into Southwood Court as Christopher’s mother, Rose, a Southwood resident herself, had worked in the print sector for many years. They were eligible for a home there through that close family connection, and the ground floor apartment is perfect for the couple, who are managing health issues.

“It’s just what we need, really,” explains Christopher. “It’s only the two of us, and we manage very well. As a ground floor apartment, we have a patio which appealed quite a bit. We’ve bought patio furniture, a few pots and some solar lights, and in the summer we can sit out there as we have the sun all day.”

A strong community

Christopher and Patricia praise the positive community spirit at Southwood, and highlight their friendly neighbours. “One of the main reasons for our decision to move to Southwood is that is something happens to either one of us, there are people here in a community to help,” Christopher says. “You’ve got that community spirit. We know that people of a similar age to us are around all the time, and the security is very good.”

Plenty of ways to socialise if you want to

Patricia is involved in many of the activities organised by the homes team, and by the residents themselves, which include bingo on Monday evenings, and a quiz every other Tuesday. As Christopher puts it: “It’s great to have a change, to get out and about, go down to the communal area, have a cup of tea and spend some time with people.”

However, the fact that residents can choose how much or how little they take part in is appreciated. “It’s independent living, which is the main thing – you’re left alone most of the time but there is real community spirit.”

“A very good place”

For the couple, the community and safety at Southwood, along with the affordable rent, has meant that their decision to move there was “the best thing we’ve ever done.”

Christopher summarises: “We’re really glad we came here. I’m in a much better frame of mind now. Things are completely different and I have less to worry about. It’s a lot easier all round. Southwood is a very good place.”
