Rising stars developing specialist skills

These stars have all chosen to progress their chosen specialism, whether this is English language editing or marketing, to bring specialist knowledge and expertise to our sector. Our funding will allow them to gain certificated training from their relevant professional association, and to benefit from the networking and community this will offer them, which will support their professional development and progression.

Grace Balfour-Harle

Grace Balfour-Harle

Grace reads pretty much everything she comes across and has developed a love of writing and creating content for magazines. She knew her passion lay in journalism and even attempted to start her own high school newspaper. Having completed a Publishing Master’s at Edinburgh Napier University, she is currently the Editorial Assistant at DC Thomson’s Beano comic. She is committed and enthusiastic about developing her skills to adapt to the changing social and publishing landscape.

Hetty Mosforth

Hetty Mosforth

The thrill of a newly printed book in her hands never diminishes for Hetty, who enjoys the collaborative nature of publishing and working with academics all around the world in her role as a junior desk editor at Edward Elgar, an academic publisher focusing on social sciences, law, and economics. She loves working with language and learning new things so now plans to study proofreading and copy editing to develop her skills in the sector.

Jordan Manning

Jordan Manning

Prior to landing her current role working for Bauer Media’s Take a Break Puzzles Department, Jordan worked as an editorial assistant at the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS), producing and editing exam papers for trainee surgeons. She has always been passionate about all matters language, grammar, spelling, and punctuation and has an English BA (Hons). She enjoys the satisfaction of refining a text and now wants to achieve her dream of being a freelance copy editor.
Laura Shanahan

Laura Shanahan

Since finishing her BA in Modern Languages at Oxford University in 2016, Laura has worked in publishing and is currently a part-time editorial assistant at Fairlight Books, a small independent publisher of literary fiction. She has recently been awarded her MA in Literary Translation Studies with Distinction and is now building up her freelance career alongside her part-time, in-house role with the aim of establishing a portfolio career as an editorial professional and translator.

Shabnom Khanom

Shabnom’s passion for publishing and literature was stoked during her degree in English Language and Literature at Oxford. She enjoys every aspect of print and publishing, from proposal and submission to editing and final proofreading. The feel of a completed book, script or academic article in her hands is unbeatable. Her freelance work as a submissions pile reader for competitions such as The Sunday Times Short Story Award has encouraged her to pursue a fiction editing career.
Cleo Asabre-Holt

Cleo Asabre-Holt

An editorial assistant at mental health and wellbeing publisher, Trigger, Cleo has loved writing since scribbling her first stories and poems as a five-year-old. A finalist in the search for Nottingham’s Young Poet Laureate, she won a full scholarship to fund her creative writing MA, graduating with distinction. She believes in writing’s therapeutic value and has found her purpose working in publishing, giving people a voice so that their stories can be heard.

Eilidh Reid

Eilidh is a marketing administrator in the Education Division at Oxford University Press where she works across Primary, Secondary and Children’s Trade Marketing. She feels publishing is the perfect sector for her as it demands equal parts creativity and practicality. Children’s publishing is a very natural path for her to take as she wants to help make education accessible to all. She plans on developing her marketing skills to progress in the sector.

Catherine was drawn to scientific publishing as it provides open access science to readers across the globe and represents a network of academic researchers striving to improve lives. As an editorial production editor at Hindawi, she oversees the journal operations process from submission to publication and enjoys the opportunity to make the peer review and production process as seamless and straightforward as possible for authors. She is also a freelance copywriter, bringing websites to life for businesses.
Victoria Montgomery

Victoria Montgomery

Victoria has worked in publishing for almost two years and is currently a marketing executive at Epigeum, part of Oxford University Press (OUP), where she plans, coordinates, and leads all marketing campaigns for its portfolio of Support and Wellbeing online courses. She loves working in publishing and during her time at Epigeum, she has constantly looked for innovative ways to reach wider audiences, broadening her marketing skills, and scoping out key areas for personal development.
Bethany White

Bethany White

Prior to joining Routledge, Taylor & Francis as an editorial assistant, Bethany completed a PhD in History and produced a podcast, Women in Oxford’s History. This led to her current fellowship with the History of Education Society to develop a podcast delving into how education has shaped our society. She is excited by the way publishing is adapting to new technologies and diversifying. Her long-term career goal is to commission and publish lesser-heard voices.
Phoebe Wyatt

Phoebe Wyatt

As a lifelong bookworm, Phoebe was drawn to the world of publishing and the idea of making books happen. As The Bookseller’s Marketing and Sales Executive she has discovered a real interest in marketing and aims to pursue this within the publishing industry. She enjoys the dynamic nature of the weekly magazine and enjoys the contrast of being at the forefront of an industry with a long and varied history.

Saffron Cooper-Siddle

Saffron loves working in publishing, particularly academic publishing, because she can play a small part in providing academic resources to students and researchers who are shaping our knowledge of the world around us. A marketing assistant at Oxford University Press (OUP), she has discovered that the business side of publishing really interests her and she enjoys writing marketing copy. It is the perfect marriage between the two industries she has always aspired to work in.
Bryony Magee

Bryony Magee

Bryony is a full-time, freelance editor and published writer offering proofreading and copy editing services to self-publishing authors. Words are her greatest passion and freelance editing has empowered her to do what she loves: sink deep between the pages of a story to help its author find the best words to communicate their message. She plans to undertake further training to extend the scope of her freelance work with traditional publishers.
