Rising stars in publishing

These stars all have one thing in common, and that’s a passion for books. At the start of their publishing careers, working across large and small houses and in all departments, they are seeking to improve their core publishing skills such as copywriting and proofreading. Our support allows them to gain industry recognised training through a variety of face to face and virtual courses that cements their on-the-job learning and allows them to progress in their publishing careers.

Eva Rojas

Eva Rojas

A project editor at independent publisher, Lion Hudson, in Oxford, Eva has always enjoyed reading and writing. She holds a Master’s in Publishing and is passionate about children’s books, board books, and fiction as well as books in translation. It took perseverance to land her editor’s job where she enjoys the creativity of developing a project, the satisfaction of editing text, and helping authors get their books published. She is inspired by the thought of the many books still yet to be written and champions new ideas.
Emma Sheffield

Emma Sheffield

Emma knew from a young age that she would relish a career where she could contribute to publishing books that people will love and has successfully curated and developed a career in publishing. She is very passionate about the traditional aspects of editorial publishing and appreciates great writing and unique narratives. Currently Assistant Editor at Oxford University Press, working in trade publishing is her goal. She is a member of the Society of Young Publishers.

Emily Badger

Emily Badger

Change and innovation in publishing excites Emily, who has recently taken on the newly established role of Development Editor at Jessica Kingsley Publishers, focusing predominantly on its Education list. Passionate about reading and encouraging others to read, the company’s promotion of inclusivity through book knowledge is the perfect fit for her. Taking advantage of advancing technologies in a fast-paced, dynamic, and customer-driven sector to find new ways to reach readers keeps her job interesting, new, and exciting.

Noah Grey

Noah Grey

A third-year Literature student at Royal Holloway, University of London, Noah likes Oscar Wilde, old architecture, galleries and museums, grappling with the rules of the German language, 80s and 90s films, and Oxford commas. He wants to see more books in cafés and on the tube and to help craft books to be so compelling that the idea of scrolling aimlessly through an Instagram feed pales in comparison. His next step will be into the world of publishing.
Emily Wootton

Emily Wootton

A publishing assistant at Epigeum, part of Oxford University Press, Emily studied English Literature at Durham University. Her enjoyment of words and visual content, eye for detail, and love of collaborative working encouraged her to forge a career in publishing. As well as experience in the charity, trade, education, and academic publishing sectors, she has an interest in illustrated non-fiction books for children and hopes to support the development of literacy in areas affected by poverty.
Madeleine Pearson

Madeleine Pearson

Madeleine is the Digital Content Manager at Manchester University Press, where she manages its ebook platform and organises the digitisation of its extensive backlist, bringing out-of-print titles back into print and making them available as ebooks. She has a BA in Languages from The Open University and an MA in Publishing Studies with Distinction from Oxford Brookes University. Her ambition is to work in project management in a sector that she regards as exciting and rewarding.
Beth Barker

Beth Barker

Passionate and driven, Beth has recently completed an English Literature degree at Manchester University. She believes bookselling is a fantastic way to realise how many people adore books and loves reading and reviewing books on social media. Proud to be part of the North’s book industry, she does a lot of blogging and reviewing books on social media and is excited by the prospect of digital coming together with print to create a really unique, hybridised industry.

Hilary Bell

Hilary Bell

Hilary is passionate about working in publishing simply because she loves books. From a young age, the power of stories has been transformative in her life and, as the Publicity Executive at Egmont UK, she feels especially lucky to work in children’s books. Prior to that, she managed major industry events for The Bookseller and was Head of Events for the Society of Young Publishers (SYP). She is on the Children’s Book Circle Committee.

Humairaa Dudhwala

Having studied English Language and Literature and with an inherent love for the written word, the prospect of working with books for a living seemed a no-brainer to Humairaa. Currently an Assistant Editorial Controller at academic publisher Manchester University Press, she finds publishing research to a wider audience rewarding; and is excited by the publishing industry’s innovation, including the way publishers have responded to Covid-19 by offering digital content for the greater good.

Aisling Holling

Aisling Holling

Books are a huge part of Aisling’s life so she switched careers from advertising to publishing, a decision she says she will never regret. Within four months of joining Saraband, a small, Manchester-based independent publisher, she was promoted to Marketing and Editorial Executive. She also volunteers as Communications Officer for the Society of Young Publishers North. She is passionate about bringing great literature to the world and selling books in ways that are not intimidating or pretentious.
Cameron Myers

Cameron Myers

Cameron believes it is an exciting time to be in publishing and, with publishers constantly adapting to new forms of media and storytelling, he plans to upskill in publishing technology to remain relevant and adaptable. His passion for books and several publishing internships convinced him publishing, not law, is his vocation. Currently working in Hodder & Stoughton’s General Non-fiction Editorial Team, he is a former events coordinator for the London Society of Young Publishers (SYP).
