“It’s great for accountability” – Jake Ross on the impact of his Rising Star-funded training

Jake Ross

Jake joined the printing trade as a copywriter and is now the editor of Solopress’s internal newsletter. He applied to the Rising Star Awards to fund courses to develop his writing skills and learn more about social media strategy.

My Rising Star application inspiration:

My manager suggested it. He took a leap of faith in me when originally employing me, so I wanted to repay his trust!

My courses:

I’m a copywriter and social media executive, so I chose courses that could develop my ability in both of those roles. I chose CopyCon to enhance my writing, and a social media strategy course to improve my ability to plan, create and execute social media content.

The impact winning had for me:

It’s been a massive confidence booster. The Rising Stars are a really well recognised industry award, so I’m sure this will stay with me throughout my career.

Where my courses will take me:

The biggest things I got from my courses was reassurance, and accountability. I learned that I’m doing the right things but that I now need to build upon that. My course on strategy really allowed me to take a step back to look at what I’m currently doing well and what I can do better. I now feel armed with an arsenal of tools to sharpen my skills going forward.  On top of the award itself, these courses will help build my profile, both now and in the future.

My message to potential Rising Star applicants:

Stop thinking about applying, and do it! I’ve failed at many things, but if you look at failure as a lesson, you can never lose, you can only learn. And in terms of applying for this award: what’s the worst that can happen?!

You can join the Rising Stars constellation and shine in your career.
